History of Armwrestling

Armwrestling – A sport that involves so much of push and pull, so much of give and take, an intense one on one combat that just a moment of being lax could cost you dearly. You just have to go on trying harder and harder, until the last ounce of strength in your muscles oozes out, and you finally pin your opponent’s hand onto the table.

Armwrestling is a popular sport, especially among youngsters, and is considered the ultimate trial of strength. And we all know that every popular school and college macho man has had his share of arm wrestling victories. What the world calls armwrestling is popular as panjaa ladaana in North India.

Armwrestling began in ancient Egypt, as is evident from a painting dating to 2000 BC found in an Egyptian tomb. Also called Indian wrestling, the modern version of the sport became popular in the 19th century.

It was initiated in India in the 1970s and it is estimated that there are currently more than 1800 armwrestling clubs across the country. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab and Assam boast the highest number of armwrestling enthusiasts. It would indeed be a moment of pride and glory to see an Indian make it to the top level in armwrestling!

It is for those who believe and respect the sport, enough to commit their life to it.

India has a whopping 17,000 plus number of armwrestling professionals, and almost the same number of amateurs too. We believe that the AWS is the perfect platform to test your guts. Come to the Armwrestling Showdown to claim your place under the limelight!

There are practically no barriers to entry, and more than 500 participants from all over the country are expected to turn up at the event. Who knows, you might be pitted against some national or international champion! Participate to have fun, to learn, or to win!
